Bullying is a widespread and serious problem that can happen anywhere. It is not a phase children have to go through, it is not “just messing around”, and it is not something to grow out of. Bullying can cause serious and lasting harm.
In April 2002 the Eychaner Foundation created the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force, also known as Iowa Safe Schools. We worked across the state for five years, hosting community forums and talking to educational and community leaders about the need to protect all students. These forums led to movements in many Iowa communities to pass protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Iowa became the 10th state in the nation to pass a comprehensive Safe Schools Law that protects All students in 2007. Iowa’s Civil Rights Law was also ammended to include protection for LGBT employees from discrimination.
