Iowa Scholarships
Iowa State University
There are currently two scholarships available through the LGBTSS office. Both are presented annually to students who have demonstrated leadership and involvement in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community at ISU. The purpose of the scholarships is to complement successful academic experiences by supporting student leadership and involvement in the LGBT community at ISU.
Scott Rohlf Presidential Leadership Initiative Award
The Scott Rohlf Presidential Leadership Initiative Award is a scholarship in its fourth year that will continue to be presented annually to one student who has demonstrated leadership and involvement in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community at ISU. The purpose of the scholarship is to complement successful academic experiences by partially supporting student leadership and involvement in the LGBT community at ISU.
The scholarship amount is $1,000.
Applicants must have all of the following qualifications:
-Be a junior or senior during Spring Semester, 2006
-Be enrolled, or planning to enroll, during Spring Semester of 2006 at Iowa State University
-Demonstrated leadership and involvement in promoting LGBT student activities at Iowa State University
-Demonstrated leadership in the promotion of a positive identity for LGBT students throughout the University community
-Committed to academic achievement as demonstrated by a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
-Must not be employed as a work-study student or intern with LGBTSS at time of application
Walter J. Allen and Shaun B. Keister Scholarship
The Walter J. Allen and Shaun B. Keister Scholarship has been awarded since 2004. This year we will be awarding one $1,000 scholarship.
Applicants must meet all of the following qualifications:
-Be enrolled, or planning to enroll, during Spring Semester of 2005 at Iowa State University.
-Be a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student during Spring Semester, 2005.
-Demonstrated leadership and involvement in promoting LGBT student activities at Iowa State University.
-Demonstrated leadership in the promotion of a positive identity for LGBT students throughout the University community.
-Committed to academic achievement as demonstrated by a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate students or 3.25 or higher for graduate students.
-Must not be employed as a work-study student, graduate assistant, or intern with LGBTSS at time of application.
FFBC Scholarship Award
The FFBC is a group of gay men organized as a non-profit corporation dedicated to awarding at least one scholarship of up to $3,000 to a high school senior who has contributed the most to reduce homophobia and increase awareness and tolerance of gay and lesbian issues in his or her school or community.
Applicants must be a resident of Iowa and intend to pursue post-secondary education. There are no restrictions or limitations in the selection procedures based upon sex, race, religion, creed, marital or employment status or sexual orientation of the prospective recipient or his/her relatives.
Applications and transcripts must be postmarked no later than March 31 for the following fall semester. The FFBC Scholarship Selection Committee will announce the scholarship recipient on or about May 1.
National Scholarships
Astraea National Lesbian Action Foundation
Astraea's grantmaking is guided by our understanding of how social change and movements for social justice develop. Our theory and practice are rooted in the following beliefs:
-Social change results from the powerful collective action of groups of people working together
-Organizations that are committed to addressing the intersections of various oppressions, and demonstrate commitment to social, racial, economic and gender justice, are most likely to help build transformative movements for social change
-Art and cultural work are powerful tools for resistance and inspiration—and are necessary components towards building a future guaranteeing human rights for all
-Communities that are most affected by various issues are best positioned to identify priorities and effective strategies for change in their communities
The fundamental purpose of feminist social justice funding institutions—like Astraea—is to help finance the sectors of our movements that are best positioned to be engines for change in our communities, in spite of having the least access to mainstream funding resources.
The Carlos Cisneros Scholarship for LGBT students attending American University
The Cisneros Scholarship benefits LGBT students of distinction attending American University. The Scholarship Fund has been created by his friends and family to honor his legacy of business and philanthropic excellence. The fund is inspired by Carlos' commitment to academic achievement and leadership development. A graduate of American University, Carlos Enrique was the former president of the Cisneros Television Group. Named as a "Global Leader for Tomorrow" by the World Economic Forum and "Citizen of the Year" by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, Cisneros was widely recognized for his ability to use his successful business profile to support education and the arts and to reach out to those in need. His passion and involvement in the community were hallmarks of his hands-on approach to business and philanthropy.
Deaf Queer Youth Scholarship
The Deaf Queer Resource Center sponsors a $500 scholarship for deaf lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer students who are out about their sexual orientation/identity. Candidates must be currently enrolled in high school or college, be under the age of 25, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. US Citizenship is required. Deaf Queer youth of color are especially encouraged to apply. Selection is based on a written or video essay. The deadline is July 15.

There are currently six scholarships offered by the Equity Foundation.
The Bill and Ann Shepherd Legal Scholarship Fund
The Bill and Ann Shepherd Legal Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to third-year law students dedicated to keeping Oregon a hate-free state. The Bill and Ann Shepherd Legal Scholarship Fund deadline is June 30, 2007.
The Pride of Rose Scholarship Fund
The Pride of the Rose Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities and their children residing in the Quad-county area of Portland, OR and Clark County, WA. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2007.
Just Out Scholarship Fund
Just Out Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities and their families. Preference given to people outside of the Portland metro area. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2007.
Kaiser Permanente Northwest Pride Scholarship
Kaiser Permanente Northwest Pride Scholarship provides scholarships to encourage members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities and their children, in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, to pursue careers in healthcare. The application will be availible on March 20, 2007 and the deadline for applications is June 30, 2007.
Portland Area Business Association Scholarship
Portland Area Business Association Scholarship provides financial assistance for post-secondary education to members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities and their children. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2007.
Orchard-Hoyman Fund for GLBT Student Scholarships
The Orchard-Hoyman Scholarship Fund offers scholarships for GLBT students ages 20 and under, who reside in Lane County, Oregon and need financial assistance to attain their post-secondary educational goals. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to separate recipients. Applications are now available. The deadline is August 31, 2007.
Lee Dubin Scholarship Fund
The Lee Dubin Scholarship is sponsored by COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) and the Family Pride Coalition (FPC). Three to five $1,000 scholarships are awarded to children of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered parents and guardians who have worked to affect change in the LGBT community and the community at large. The deadline is April 15.

LEAGUE at AT&T Foundation
LEAGUE at AT&T Foundation awards scholarships for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender high school seniors who have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and who are actively and substantially involved in community service. Scholarships include the Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship (name used with permission of the Shepard family), named for the Wyoming college student murdered in 1998 for his sexual orientation, and the LEAGUE at AT&T Foundation Scholarship. The application deadline is in mid-April.

Live Out Loud Annual Scholarship
The Live Out Loud Annual Scholarship provides three $2,500 scholarships to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and allies who have made significant contributions to society by "living out loud" and supporting the LGBT community. The scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and to students who deferred attending an educational institution for one year following graduation. Award selection is based on academic credentials, an essay, leadership and community service involvement, an interview, two letters of recommendation, financial need and future goals. The deadline is March 31.

Malyon-Smith Scholarship Award
The American Psychological Association's Division 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues) offers this award to support graduate student research into psychological issues relevant to gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals, groups or communities. The scholarship amount is up to $1,000. The deadline is February 1, with applications available after November 1.

Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program
The Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program offers several $10,000 scholarships ($5,000 for the first year and $2,500 for the second and third years) to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students pursuing a degree in journalism and communications at an accredited four-year college or university. High school seniors and current undergraduate students are eligible to apply. A GPA of 2.8 or better is required. The award is sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). Winners are required to participate in the Messenger-Anderson Scholarship Intern Program at NGLTF offices in Washington, DC, or New York City during the summer. The deadline is in mid-February.

NGPA-Education Fund Scholarships for Aviation Students
The National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) Education Fund provides scholarships to members of the gay and lesbian community (including straight allies) who are pursuing an aviation career as a professional pilot. Applicants must be accepted at or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with an aviation related curriculum (e.g., aerospace, aerodynamics, engineering, airport management) in pursuit of a degree leading to a career as a professional pilot or accepted to or undergoing a course of study in a recognized professional pilot aviation training program in an institution of higher learning, aviation technical school, or government approved flight school. Scholarship funds cannot be used to pay for the basic Private Pilot Certificate; they must be applied towards advanced fight training at a government certified flight school or to college tuition if enrolled in an accredited aviation degree program. More than $60,000 has been awarded in scholarships; in 2007, NGPA-EF intends to award at least three scholarships totaling $9,000. The application deadline is March 1.
National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA)
NLGJA provides several scholarships and awards for LGBT students interested in journalism. These include the $5,000 Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship (deadline February 1), the $1,000 Bob Ross Student Scholarship from the NLGJA Northern California Chapter (deadline mid-July), and the $500 and $1,000 Excellence in Journalism Awards.
NWSA Graduate Scholarships in Lesbian Studies
This award provides financial assistance to graduate students doing Master's thesis or Ph.D. dissertation research in lesbian studies. Students do not need to be enrolled in a women's studies program. Preference is given to candidates who are National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) members. The scholarship amount is $500 per year. The deadline is February 15 of each year.

PFLAG National GLBT Scholarship Program
The PFLAG National GLBT Scholarship Program was established by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in 2003 to help support the education of GLBT youth and allies. It includes eleven award programs. The scholarship program was funded by the estate of Palmer B. Carson. The $2,500 scholarships include:

To be eligible, a candidate must be a graduating high school senior who self-identifies as either a GLBT person or supporter and who demonstrates an interest in service to the GLBT community.
The Point Foundation
The Point Foundation is a national, publicly-supported scholarship fund that provides financial support, mentoring and hope to meritorious undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students who are marginalized because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Awards amounts vary based on need, and are renewed annually until the completion of one's degree as long as key expectations are met in the "Contract of Excellence" signed by each Scholar, which includes a requirement to maintain a 3.5 GPA. Past award amounts have ranged from $5,000 to $28,000 per year. The deadline is March 1. The Point Foundation also sponsors the Carlos Enrique Cisneros Scholarship Fund for LGBTQ students attending American University (Washington, DC). Queer Foundation Scholarships
The Queer Foundation sponsors an English essay contest to promote queer studies. Three winners will each receive $1,000 scholarships for study in queer theory or a related field. Applicants should be LGBTQA high school students. The deadline is February 29, 2008.

Roy Scrivner Research Grants
The American Psychological Foundation (APF) sponsors the Roy Scrivner Research Grants for graduate and postdoctoral research concerning the study of lesbian, gay and bisexual family psychology and family therapy. There are two graduate student grants of up to $1,000 each and one postdoctoral grant of up to $10,000. The deadline is November 1.

SOLGA Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize Competition
The American Anthropological Association - Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA) offers this award for a scholarly anthropological paper, written by a student, on a gay or lesbian topic. The prize consists of a cash award and a letter of commendation from the Prize Committee. (The prize is not specifically for tuition, but rather is intended to reward excellent graduate student papers.) The deadline is July 15.

Zami
Zami offers the Audre Lorde Scholarship and several other $1,000 scholarships to gay and lesbian undergraduate and graduate students of African descent who are making significant contributions to their communities. Zami is Atlanta's premiere organization for lesbians of African descent, and the award's emphasis is on service to the lesbian community. The deadline is May 15.
