De Kalb, Il - The Howard and Mildred Eychaner Minority Scholarship announced 2007 scholarships will be presented to Chanta Sam and Adrian Gonzalez, students at De Kalb High school during the 38 th Annual De Kalb High School Senior Awards Night, May 23 rd at 6:30 PM.

Chanta Sam taught others about Cambodian culture by sharing the traditions, language and music as a means of improving circumstances for minority students at De Kalb High School. She intends to study nursing with the goal to help others.

Adrian Gonzalez led efforts to integrate minorities as a Latino student by leading student focus groups, presenting at training workshops and coaching at summer soccer camps. He intends to study criminology or education so he can continue to interact with a spectrum of communities.

The Howard and Mildred Eychaner Minority Scholarship is named in memory of Howard and Mildred, long time residents of De Kalb until their deaths in 2005. During their lives, Howard and Mildred welcomed many minority families and individuals into the community, beginning with African Americans and Cubans in the late 1950's. The Scholarship honors minority students (defined as race, ethnicity, national origin, disability or sexual orientation) who will attend Northern Illinois University. The scholarship is awarded based on academic aptitude, academic achievement, financial need and community service .
