Agreement Reached Between the Eychaner Foundation and the Diocese of Davenport

Press Release

The Diocese of Davenport and The Eychaner Foundation announce that an agreement has been reached regarding the presentation of the Matthew Shepard Scholarship to Keaton Fuller at Prince of Peace College Preparatory School in Clinton, Iowa.

Under the agreement, Dr. Lee Morrison, Diocesan Superintendent of Schools will read a script prepared by the Eychaner Foundation, which was reviewed and approved by the Most Rev. Martin J. Amos, Bishop of Davenport. Mike Simonson, a prominent architect and member of the scholarship committee, will present an eagle statue to Fuller.

The Eychaner Foundation, which sponsors Iowa’s Matthew Shepard Scholarship program, thanked Bishop Amos for graciously working to find a mutually acceptable way to resolve the dispute regarding the presentation of the scholarship.

“From the beginning, Keaton Fuller and his family were committed to a respectful action to insure that all students were treated fairly, without disrupting the graduation ceremony,” Rich Eychaner said. “By keeping the protest gracious and being respectful of the prerogatives of the Diocese, we were able to find common ground in a procedure all parties could support. We appreciate Bishop Amos’ willingness to find a mutually agreeable resolution.”

Bishop Amos congratulated Keaton on his graduation and success in receiving a prestigious scholarship, and the Eychaner Foundation for respecting Catholic teaching regarding speakers in Catholic churches. Regardless of the different views held by Mr. Eychaner and the Diocese on same sex marriage, the work of the Foundation for tolerance and respect for all people is commendable, especially regarding the anti-bullying programs they advocate. The Diocese also supports anti-bullying and anti-discrimination as outlined in its 2007 “Anti-Bullying/ Harassment Policy.” “Principles of mutual respect and careful listening exhibited by all parties allowed a solution to emerge,” Bishop Amos explained. “We have many things we agree upon, and have also agreed to accept the fact that we also have some things we disagree about. But that shouldn’t prevent all of us from celebrating Keaton Fuller’s success over 13 years in Catholic schools and our mutual hope for his success in college and beyond.”

Keaton Fuller said he was pleased a solution was found, and indicated he was glad the matter was resolved. “My biggest fear was that this matter would overwhelm my classmate’s significant accomplishments and the joy we all feel in graduating,” he said. “My family is focusing now on graduation and celebrating the end of the school year.”

Eychaner Foundation Reaction to Diocese Response

Press Release

The mission of the Eychaner Foundation is to promote tolerance, understanding and anti-bullying policies. We help Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students survive and work to prevent teen suicide. We’re shocked that Bishop Amos and the Diocese of Davenport find these positions “contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church”.

Do their beliefs support intolerance and bullying?

How can it be acceptable to have school staff present the award in the school, but not allow the sponsor of the award to make the presentation? How is the award itself acceptable to Catholic beliefs but not those who make it possible? Why would we allow others to present an award we make possible?

What is objectionable about a mission of tolerance and understanding, supporting bullied students and suicide prevention that makes us unwelcome at Prince of Peace, but not representatives of US Military Academies and casinos who are allowed to present scholarships at diocesan schools?

We have been overwhelmed by the world wide support at change.org for Keaton Fuller and having the Matthew Shepard Scholarship presented by the scholarship committee at the awards ceremony.

Bishop Amos: Let Prince of Peace Honor its Agreement

Posted in Matthew Shepard Scholarship

The Eychaner Foundation applauds the Prince of Peace school board for its' support of having Keaton Fuller's scholarship presented as the school has promised to do. Ed O'ONeill told the Quad-Cities Times the following:

Ed O’Neill, president of the Prince of Peace school board, said Keaton’s scholarship was discussed at the April 17 school board meeting and nobody expressed any concerns about having someone from the Eychaner Foundation present Keaton with his scholarship.

O’Neill said he was “disappointed and confused” by the diocese’s decision, especially because the school already had given assurance that a representative of the foundation would be allowed to present the scholarship.

“If you say you’re going to do something, you do it,” O’Neill said. “I guess I don’t understand what the big deal is about somebody from the foundation coming to present the award.”

O’Neill said it is common practice at the school for representatives of organizations awarding scholarships to make the presentations to the winning students.

Tell Bishop Martin Amos that you support Keaton and to let the school honor its agreement.

Keaton Fuller's Thank You to Prince of Peace

Re: Thank You

First of all, I would like to say that I have been in awe of the tremendous amount of support that I have received from you this week. I can’t begin to explain how much it meant to me to hear all of the supportive and encouraging things that many of you have expressed to me. This has been a challenging and stressful time, but hearing so much positive feedback made it significantly easier to keep moving forward. I couldn’t have made it to this point without every one of you. As I leave Prince of Peace, it’s comforting to know that this experience may make it easier for the next gay student who attends this school.

Please know that this week has not been about me. Rather, it has been about recognizing that everybody deserves to be treated equally, regardless of any differences we may have. This school has taught us time and time again that we are all made equally, and we all must continue to spread that message through our words and our actions. Mutual respect for one another is essential if we are all to coexist peacefully.

I’m pleased to confirm that an agreement has been reached concerning the issue of my scholarship presentation. I congratulate Bishop Amos and the Eychaner Foundation for respectfully discussing the situation and agreeing to have a school representative read the scholarship presentation and a scholarship committee member will hand me the Eagle Statue. Keeping the discussions civil and focused allowed an agreement to be reached.

Now, I would like nothing more than to be able to move on and celebrate graduation. I’ve never wanted the graduation ceremony on May 20th to be about just me, or this issue. It is about twenty-two incredible individuals, all of whom deserve to be honored equally for our hard work and accomplishments. I am very proud to be a part of the Prince of Peace graduating class of 2012, and it is with them that I wish to experience the rest of my senior year to the fullest.

Respectfully,

Keaton M. Fuller
