
Iowa's LGBT Scholarship honoring Matthew Shepard and DeKalb Illinois' Minority Scholarship honoring Howard and Mildred Eychaner is underwritten by the Rich Eychaner Charitable Foundation, a priviate foundation based in Des Moines, Iowa. Rich Eychaner has founded and operated a variety of businesses in Iowa since 1975. In 1984 he was Iowa's first openly gay candidate for federal office when he sought the 4th District Republican nomination for the US House of Representatives.

Michael Bowser, Scholarship Coordinator and Communications Director
Michael is a 2006 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Communications with an emphasis in Electronic Media. He is a 2002 Matthew Shepard Scholarship Recipient.
At the University of Northern Iowa, Michael served as President of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allied Union and launched a magazine for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied high school and college students in Iowa called Queer and Allies. Michael also served on the Board of Directors for the Community AIDS Assistance Project in Eastern Iowa for four years as Communications Director.
Currently, Michael serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of Iowa Civil Rights and is the Scholarship Coordinator and Communications Director for the Eychaner Foundation.
